Sometimes the smallest of things throw us off our path…
Unfortunately this blog is not the most exciting thing to write or to read about even, but it is necessary.
Often when we think of the things that excite us, whether we are experiencing them in the moment or we just anticipate them, the last thing that we think about is insurance.
Lets be honest, nothing about the word inspires any sort of excitement!!
Imagine someone walks up to you and ask…”what’s making you smile so much, what are you so excited about?” You: “ Oh, ha! You’ll never believe this…I just purchased travel insurance!!”…. Uhm….yep, exactly, they will look at you like you’re completely hinged!!
On the other hand, something happens, not foreseen…a complete inconvenience…your luggage is delayed, you lose your wallet/ makeup bag/passport (doesn’t matter how careless you are, please don’t lose your passport, it’s really not cute! And in an airplane don’t put it in the pouch of the seat in front of you…just don’t! ). Or worse, there’s an accident or robbery (we don’t want to think about these things…but they happen, sorry for this little reality). That face that would look at you like you’re the maddest thing to have ever walked the planet, well that face would be like “ what the Ffffffff were you thinking to not take travel insurance, how could you be so blah blah blah…. enough to not think of being insured?
…
Travel insurance is not sexy, in fact no insurance is, it’s just not exciting but guess what? It’s necessary. It doesn’t matter where in the world you want to travel to, whether by yourself or not. Purchase it, it doesn’t have to be expensive, it usually isn’t…you’ll only need it just for the number of days on which you’ll be traveling away from home. For South Africans, it is mandatory that we get travel insurance ( and we always moan about it still) and this is because it’s required for visa applications, but actually it should be a thing to throw a little money on, even if it’s not for visa. For anyone from Europe, Americas etc. or those with passports from these countries, no one expects them to have travel insurance because they don’t generally need a visa. But I really recommend that you consider it when you plan to travel, for your own peace of mind (if you like) because well …things happen. Having travel insurance covers for more than just the few examples I listed above. It covers you in terms of your flights being delayed or canceled, if there’s any medical attention you may need, or whatever other things that it may come in handy for.
I would recommend it for people traveling to South Africa and anywhere else in the world actually, it’s not about where it’s safe, and where it isn’t. Although I’d always advise people to be mindful of their environment or where they go to, where it’s considered “safe “ and where it isn’t so much. Thing is, you should always be aware. The “unsafe” places always means you don’t let your guard down. But what about the “safe” ones? Should you let your guard down?…NO, you always need to be aware not paranoid and literally shifting your eyes from the from the front of your face to the back of your head or walking around with a mirror just to see the situation behind you …but just be aware.
Trailed off a bit but yes, please please please….get travel insurance. Not that you expect things to go wrong but just that, should something happen…at least there’s a backup plan!
